Learning an additional language has many benefits, not least being that you will be able to converse with many more people and this could lead you in hundreds of new directions.
One of the most popular languages to learn is Spanish; this is no great surprise as Spanish is one of the world’s most beautiful language and is spoken in more than twenty countries that have Spanish as their native language. In addition to this, many of these countries are beautiful holiday destinations.
So, how can you learn Spanish?
There are a number of ways to learn a new language, and unfortunately, until you try it is very difficult to know which will be the easiest and best for you, but here are my top tips for how to learn the beautiful Spanish language:
Immerse yourself
This is the best and quickest way to learn Spanish. By totally immersing yourself you will need to live in a Spanish speaking country and totally surround yourself with the language. Initially you will feel as though you are drowning in confusion, but this will pass and you will eventually realise that you can distinguish a massive amount of Spanish rapidly.
Most people will be able to speak Spanish fluently after immersing themselves in the language for around a year. This is obviously not feasible for most, but if you do get the opportunity to do this, even for a very short while, it will benefit not only the range of your vocabulary, but pronunciation as well. You will find that Spanish speaking people are very proud of the way their language sounds and they will correct you!
Listen
When learning any new language you need to try to listen to as much as you can. This may mean picking up some Spanish records or watching your favourite film in Spanish – most DVDs now come with a language option.
This is great as you will probably already know many of the lines from the film in your native tongue off by heart; this will help you begin to make links between your language and Spanish.
Practise
It is now good having a bank of words that you can spell, read and understand, but that you have no idea how to say them. Most people chose to learn Spanish to enable them to communicate, thus it is vital to be able to pronounce these words.
Try sounding them out and see how they sound. When doing this it is ideal if you have someone with you to correct any mispronunciations, but you can always use audio tapes to correct yourself.
Practise again
Yep! The only way to learn a language well is with perseverance. If you think you have done enough, you probably need to spend another hour on it! Try to get Spanish pen friends or chat online with a Spanish speaking person.
There may well be a Latin community living within you community just waiting to boost their understanding of the English language – a perfect combination.
How to learn Spanish? Keep on trying and enjoy!
